I grew up in India where I was surrounded by the most abject poverty one can not even imagine. I always wondered if there was something I could do to help in some way. Even just to help one person. My younger sister had a lisp during childhood, and I helped her to improve her articulation. When I was thinking of what I wanted to study in college, I came across communication sciences and it really resonated with me that other people may struggle with communication and I could help. I thought that would be so rewarding. Through that path, I landed in the profession of audiology and I have always been grateful as it is what I am meant to be doing.
I worked in a variety of settings including a school district, hospitals, and special education clinics prior to moving to Lancaster, PA. After working in Lancaster for a few months, I realized there was a big need for quality hearing healthcare services. People were traveling to places like Philadelphia and Baltimore, over 90 miles away, for services I felt should be provided in our community. So I started my practice with the hopes of filling this need. Now, almost 20 years later, it has exceeded all my expectations. We have helped over 20,000 ears and gone on 20 humanitarian relief trips to bring hearing healthcare to some of the world’s most needy people.
I love helping patients on the journey to better hearing. Each and every person has so much unrealized potential, and they become imprisoned in a silent bubble when they have untreated hearing loss, creating barriers to relationships and well-being. Everyone has a story, and I love to watch their potential unleash with improved hearing and communication.
I was inspired by a book I read to my kids when they were young. “Miss Rumphius” is a story of a young girl whose grandfather told her that she must do something to make the world more beautiful when she grew up. She wondered what one person could do, but she ended up planting beautiful lupines in her community that grew and blossomed along the many paths and fields. This inspired me to think of what I could do which led me to Entheos and humanitarian work. I feel really grateful and fortunate to be able to be a part of this wonderful organization.
